The Église Saint‑Jean‑Baptiste de Belleville is one of the first churches of neo‑Gothic architecture built in Paris. It was constructed between 1854 and 1859. The church consists of a five‑bay nave with two side aisles and eight lateral chapels, a transept, a choir with an additional bay extending beyond the nave, a ambulatory giving access to seven chapels, two sacristies, and two bell towers topped with spires. Because it was his final project, Saint‑Jean‑Baptiste de Belleville is considered the most accomplished work of the architect Jean‑Baptiste‑Antoine Lassus (1807–1857), one of the first prominent figures of the Gothic Revival in mid‑19th‑century France. At Belleville, Lassus defined the structure, fixed the iconographic programme and designed the church’s interior furnishings; the sculpted decoration is the work of Aimé‑Napoléon Perrey and the stained‑glass windows were made by Auguste de Martel, based on cartoons by Louis Steinheil.Source
